Short Term Rentals

Short term rental public consultation

The Township of Douro-Dummer is investigating options to regulate the use of short term rentals (STR) and is seeking public input.

STRs are offered through a variety of methods including word of mouth and online platforms such as Airbnb, Vrbo and Kijiji.  Hosts may rent entire homes, apartments in homes or rooms in homes to the travelling public on a short term basis. There are a number of impacts associated with STRs:

  • On the positive side, they provide hosts with income generating opportunities. STRs also provide unique, alternative accommodations for tourists, larger groups, and medium term occupants such as hospital patients, locums and short term workers.
  • Potential negative impacts include increased neighbourhood complaints such as noise and safety of units, increase in rent prices, removal of long term rental units from the local supply and commercialization of residential areas.

More general information on STRs can be found in The Home Sharing Guide for Ontario Municipalities.

A survey is available for public input, to complete the survey please visit Survey Regarding Short Term Rentals.

The Township of Douro-Dummer will be holding a public meeting to receive input from the public on short term rentals (STR) via Zoom on April 7, 2022 beginning at 5:00pm.
