Waste Diversion Programs

In addition to blue box recycling, the Hall's Glen Transfer Station collects the following materials year-round:

  • Batteries – up to 5 kg (11 lbs)
  • Electronics and electrical recycling
    • Air conditions, dehumidifiers, fridges, freezers, water coolers and gas-powered devices are not recyclable in this program
  • Food waste
  • Motor oil
  • Re-usable textiles
  • Tires – rims must be removed (tires on rims will not be accepted)

Household hazardous waste can be dropped off year round at the City of Peterborough's Household Hazardous Waste Depot, or watch for a Household Hazardous Waste event to take place at the Hall's Glen Transfer Station.

The following waste diversion programs are available, please contact the program organizer for details:
  • Clothing, fabrics and household items in good condition can be donated to several charities; however not all charities accept clothing or fabric that is damaged. Value Village will accept clothing and fabric that is no longer wanted due to rips, worn patches or stains (moldy or soiled clothing must be washed and dried before donating). For a list of accepted items visit the Value Village website.
  • Many animal shelters accept donations of used blankets, linens, towels and pet/livestock equipment. Call your local shelter to determine what items they will accept.
  • Styrofoam used in packaging (such as the shaped pieces around electronics for shipping) should be dropped off at the 24-hr Recycling Depot at 400 Pido Road.
  • Books in good condition can be donated.
  • Empty pesticide and seed bags and containers may be eligible for return through CleanFARMS.
  • Bale wrap, silage bags, mulch film, greenhouse film, pallet stretch wrap and boat wrap may be collected by Switch Energy Corp. Farmers, marinas and organizations that deal with this waste can contact Switch Energy Corp for details.
