Changes Coming to the Blue Bin Recycling Program – Effective January 1, 2026

During the Regular Council Meeting on December 2, 2025, Council received a report regarding the upcoming provincial changes to the blue box recycling program.

The Report outlined the changes brought forth by the Ontario Provincial Government to launch a province-wide recycling initiative. Through this initiative they have awarded the responsibility for collecting and processing recycling across Ontario to Circular Materials, and are shifting towards full producer responsibility for recyclable materials.

Impact on Residential Properties and Other Eligible Sources:

Residential properties will continue to receive curbside recycling collection.

Eligible Sources such as schools, non-profit long-term care facilities, and retirement homes will continue to receive curbside recycling collection.

Impact on Industrial, Commercial, Institutional Properties and Other Non-Eligible Sources

Effective January 1, 2026, Non-Eligible Sources such as businesses, places of worship, municipal buildings, daycares, commercial farms, charities, campgrounds, and trailer parks will no longer receive curbside recycling collection.

Instead of blue box collection, these Non-Eligible Source generators will be responsible for establishing and managing their own recycling.

• Waste Connections of Canada site located at 348 County Road 6
• Material Recycling Facility at 390 Pido Road in Peterborough.
