Fire Department Awarded $68,141 in Provincial Funding for New Protective Equipment

The Douro-Dummer Fire Department have recently been notified by the MPP Dave Smith that the Department has been awarded $68,141 from the Government of Ontario through the Fire Protection Grant.

The Fire Protection Grant will be providing approximately $20 million to fire departments across Ontario to purchase life-saving equipment.

The Department will use the funds to purchase the following protective equipment to ensure the safety of Douro-Dummer’s 60+ volunteer firefighters:

Exhaust Scrubber

An exhaust scrubber is a multi-stage progressive air filtration system. This filtration system will be mounted the ceiling of Fire Station 2 to clean the air. Because most of Douro-Dummer Fire Department vehicles have diesel engines, the exhaust produced by these vehicles are recognized as “Cancer Causing Carcinogens”.

Without an exhaust scrubber residue adheres to walls, equipment, and clothing which can lead to it being absorbed through the skin and remain present in the lungs. The addition of an exhaust scrubber will ensure improved air quality at the fire station and ensure that no diesel residue will cling to surfaces.

Hose Scrubber

A hose scrubber is a tool used to clean and eliminate toxic residue from fire hoses. This ensures that cancer causing carcinogens are not present on the outside of the hose and are not being absorbed through the skin or released into the air.

The hose scrubber also ensures the longevity of the hoses by removing contaminates that can break down the fibers in the hose.
