NOTICE: Maria Street Swing Bridge in Peterborough to Close for Replacement Beginning December 7, 2026
Parks Canada has announced that the Maria Street Swing Bridge in Peterborough will close for approximately 12 months, beginning December 7, 2026, through December 2027, to accommodate the replacement of the bridge.
During construction, Maria Street will be closed to through traffic at the swing bridge. Local road closures and detours will be in place, and motorists are encouraged to follow posted signage and plan their travel accordingly.
Important Traffic and Travel Information:
- Maria Street will be closed to through traffic at the swing bridge for the duration of construction.
- Additional local road restrictions and detours will be in effect.
- Trucks weighing more than 4 tonnes must follow the designated alternate truck route.
- Motorists should allow extra travel time and exercise caution around construction areas.
- The closure will affect roadway traffic only. Navigation along the Trent-Severn Waterway will not be impacted.
- The Trans Canada Trail multi-use pathway crossing Lock 20 will remain open and maintained throughout the winter, including access to Ashburnham Drive.
Parks Canada is working closely with the City of Peterborough to coordinate traffic diversions and minimize impacts on emergency services and public transit. Motorists are encouraged to review the designated detour routes and plan ahead when travelling through the area.
About the Project
The replacement bridge will provide a longer service life and increased vehicle load-carrying capacity. This work is part of a coordinated infrastructure project that also includes the rehabilitation of the Peterborough Earth Dams and repairs to the Peterborough Lift Lock.
These improvements support public safety and the long-term preservation of the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site, helping ensure this important historic canal corridor can be enjoyed by future generations.
Parks Canada thanks residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation throughout construction.
